This is an interesting one.
Firstly, big UP to snailman for making stuff happen!!
I agree that if we are aiming to find the most versatile and consistent sailors, we need to look across all the disciplines and styles of windsurfing which are happening today.
The current format of Nationals:
-Doesn't reward the new generation of talented freaky freestyle -keeps a traditional niche discipline like 'formula' as a mandatory discipline, immediately excluding the majority of SA sailors from the overall National title.
It seems everyone agrees that we need to cater for more disciples, but there's no consensus on which disciplines...
I think sailors should compete across 3 disciples which are personally chosen to include at least one from SLALOM, FORMULA, SPEED and at least one from FREESTYLE, WAVE, SUPERx (the aim is to make mandatory disciples out of 'racing' of some kind, and 'tricks' of some kind)
For this proposal to work, it would suggest a multi-event approach, which should be considered because by focussing on one event only, the event is bound to be hit and miss wherever it is, and not very inclusive.
In an ideal world, i think the winner should emerge over a full season (1 year period), from a series of events (even if they are small/medium sized events)
I would imagine at least 4-5 events countrywide, including Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Durban, Walvis Bay, and perhaps an inland venue for a formula event (Welkom?)
We certainly have the resources amongst us to stage one decent event in each of these cities.
It probably makes sense to aim to make the largest event the final one, where the winning sailors are decided and announced, i would argue that Cape Town is the obvious choice for this.
Perhaps Steven's proposed event should be regarded as the 'final' event in Cape Town, whichever disciples it includes, and work backwards from there, adding additional 'Nationals' events to the series if someone steps forward to organise them.

Dear all, Firstly, I'd like to congratulate you on the idea of organizing a well supported windsurfing event in South Africa. I think it would be a fantastic opportunity to showcase what is, arguably, one of the least well known but every bit as much spectacular sports to the general public. The media in Cape Town are fascinated by big waves, stormy weather, kitesurfers launching for the moon and sharks, as evidenced by the occasional picture in the Cape Times, sometimes even on the front page. I’m sure windsurfing fits into that sensationalist equation. If you can sell them a story, they will print it. I believe the focus should be on maximum media coverage, and you should have your own well informed reporter to feed the media newsflashes in a dispassionate but informative way. With regards to the questions posed above I would like to suggest the following:
1) February is in my opinion the month that combines maximum wave likelihood and wind consistency, even in times of small swell plenty wind-swell can be found in melkbos. There is always a ramp around for jumping.
2) 9 days with two weekends and maybe the wave and freestyle events should be held on the weekends to attract a crowd.
3) I think you should always have the spectator’s point of view in mind, in slalom racing that means Le Mans start and possibly even a finish on the beach. You could have a national championship within the general table of a single elimination wave comp provided there are at least as many foreigners as there are locals participating. It would even put a nice spin on the event: SA champ meets (defeats?) best of the rest… . Objecting to shoving all south africans into one half of the tournament table on the grounds that it’s an unfair advantage to winning the overall title would be patronizing to the local talent.
Regards,
Roald |

Thanks Steve for your efforts
I agree with Matthew's sentiments in general. A few events countrywide culminating in a main event (Cape Town in Feb) would be first prize for me.
Other points... - Include free style and SuperX - National champion calculation formula should pick the sailor who has performed the best in 3 or 4 disciplines (out of the 6 to 8 disciplines that might have events)
Cheers,
Mark

Provisional Calendar Out Now....
Check it out under EVENTS.
Although this has been a mammoth effort from multible parties around the country, it is an ongoing effort and we will keep the site updated as things unfold.
Key dates:
> Inanda Dam Team Racing: Grant will soon get back with an update, but it may go to Durban. The dates will more than likely stay.
> SA Wave Tour: 3 rounds (PE, Durb's and CT) and promises to be the major and most coveted series of the year.
> Speed: A possible 2-stop speed tour to Walvis Bay and Luderitz. Watch for updates.
> Cape WaterMan: A triathlon of windsurfing/kitesurfing, running and swimming to be held in the Table View/Big Bay area. So get training now if you intend to be top dog at the event.
> SA Open (Big Bay Classic): This season incorporating freestyle and slalom. For sure to be the premier multi-discipline event in Cape Town this summer.
> Langebaan D.Dash: The biggest and longest running racing event. Top that!
So, a feature-rich season, but also watch out for news on our new kids development clinic and freestyle school.
Also Note: GPS Speed League has already started and will count towards your points for Speed and National Champion, but more on that later.
Just note the events and get ready for a massive summer adventure.

Excellent. Can you clarify your notation. I am trying capture the data into my Google Calendar ( - Available on request).
What does a bracketed event type mean: eg. Race (X)
Club events in black, and listed one after each other.... For example:
Sunday 7 September – Saturday 13 September – Sunday 14 September – Club Racing
Does this represent 3 events or, 2 events on the 7th and 13-14
Please explain this entry:
Saturday 1 November – Sunday 2 November – Saturday 8 November – 2 - 8 November SA Wave Tour (Rnd 2) KZN - Durban Sunday 9 November –
Members have a range extension and must be there on 2nd and 8th only??
Thanks for the enlightenment.
Cheers

For sure;
(X) means that race is a qualifying round for the pro-division of the Langebaan Downwind Dash (because there are so many riders). BUT, ignore it for the time being. The event organiser will decide those details.
The days with no event next to them are free. The multi-day events, like the SA Wave Tour in Durb's, is from 2 till 8 Nov. ie. 7 days total. All other events are that day only.
any further questions, you can e-mail me at wc@windsurfingafrica.org

This is the final recommendation, based on the will of the windsurfers of SA, for the awarding of SA National Champions. The other regional representatives have accepted the proposal, which I now present for the forthcoming season.
Recommendation for the Awarding of South African National Discipline Champions, the Overall National Champion, and the Structure of SA Windsurfing
By:
Steven Rhodes
Chairman SA Windsurfing
SAS-WC Windsurfing Chairperson
www.WindsurfingAfrica.org
19 July 2008
To:
Julian Field
Inland Windsurfing Representative
Dave Wyatt
Eastern Cape Windsurfing Representative
James Thorpe
KwaZulu-Natal Windsurfing Representative
This is my recommendation for the awarding of SA Windsurfing National Champions. The recommendation follows a two month survey conducted in May and June 2008 through the following channels;
- Personal conversations with various respected individuals.
- The Stormchasers.org.za website online forum (7 replies, unknown views).
- The WindsurfingAfrica.org website online forum (48 replies, 2100+ views).
- Direct e-mail with riders from various regions (60+ e-mails).
The basic summary of the survey is that the riders want;
- recognition for their efforts
- quality events
- equal opportunity to compete for the national title
- interesting racing/competitions at new venues
- not to be knocked out in the 1st round of eliminations because a number of pro-riders decided to attend the event
- but they want a greater turnout at events
- fresh/new riders entering the scene
- better party vibe

What also needs to be considered are the economic and geographic circumstances we are faced with in South Africa, namely;
- we live in a large country, with a very long coastline
- the suitability of the conditions from region to region and what time of the year they work best
- rising fuel costs
- rising equipment costs
- the number and level of the average SA windsurfer
- the ‘hotspots’ and number of foreigners/pro-riders in SA
With this in mind, and looking to what has worked in other countries and organisations, this is my recommendation.
An SA National Champion will be determined for each discipline, and, an overall SA National Champion, based on the following criteria.
- The disciplines for the 2008/2009 season will be as follows
- Youth
- Wave
- Freestyle
- Super Cross
- Speed
- Racing (slalom and formula)
- The country will be divided into four regions, with corresponding code designations;
- Inland – GP
- KwaZulu/Natal – KZN
- Eastern Cape – EC
- Western Cape – WC
- Eligibility
- Any rider living/working in SA is eligible to compete in the events sanctioned under this recommendation.
- However, riders may only compete if they have a registered SA sail number with the national body.
- Sail Numbers
- SA sail numbers are issued by Julian Field
- There is no fee for registering a sail number
- The rider must supply the relevant contact information and be added to the national database
- The Windsurf Calendar Period
- Currently the only windsurfing calendar period specified is that of the GPS Speed League – 1 May to 30 April.
- I recommend sticking with the GPS calendar year… April is a good time of the year to host and present a national champ awards ceremony/party.
- Regional and National Events
- Each region may host a maximum of three sanctioned events per discipline.
- In each region, one event per discipline may be classified as a National event, should the requirements be met (outlined below).
- The remaining two sanctioned events will be classified as Regional events.
- Points and Classification of National events
- A National event carries more points for equivalent finishing positions (2100 pts for 1st).
- A National event must have a minimum of 15 paid and registered riders.
- The event must be planned as a multi-day event on consecutive days.
- However, should only one day’s racing be possible, the event will not be demoted to a Regional event.
- Points and Classification of Regional events
- A Regional event carries fewer points for equivalent finishing positions (1638 pts for 1st).
- 1st place at a Regional event is equivalent in points to 15th place at a National event – this is to encourage riders to make the effort to travel to an event.
- A Regional event must have a minimum of 10 paid and registered riders.
- The event may take place on a single day or over several non-consecutive days.
- Determination of an SA Discipline National Champion
- Each race/heat is scored as so in the past; i.e. Using the PWA scoring system (PWA Part 1 – General Rules, sec. 1.13) or equivalently, the ISAF Alternative Points Scoring System for windsurfers (ISAF RRS 2005 – 2008, Appendix B8.3)
- Normal discard rules apply in determining the final ladder at each event (ISAF RRS 2005 – 2008, Appendix B8.2).
- For each event, riders are awarded points according to their final finishing position.
- The points awarded are based on the Ranking Scoring System used by PWA (Part 1 – General Rules, sec. 1.15). i.e. 2100 pts for 1st place in a National event and 1638 pts for 1st place in a Regional event.
- A riders’ ranking within a national discipline ladder will be determined by his/her points from their top three sanctioned events.
- Any sanctioned event in SA may be considered in their point’s calculation for the relevant discipline.
- At the end of the season, the rider in each discipline with the most points is that disciplines SA National Champion.
- Determination of the SA Overall National Champion
- A riders’ overall national ranking will be determined by his/her top three points scoring disciplines.
- At the end of the season, the rider with the most points is the overall SA National Champion.
...see Events Page
The events listed are the only ones that have been communicated to me in my efforts. Clearly the Western Cape has the bulk of the events known too me, but I would strongly encourage organisers in the other regions, to host events at a level that could be sanctioned under these recommendations for the benefit of their riders. If there are any other events that should be considered for this proposal, please e-mail me with the relevant information.
- I feel this strategy gives each region an equal opportunity to host the minimum number of events that enable them to compete for a discipline national title and overall national title.
- It places restriction on the minimum size and duration of an event to ensure a group of riders in one region, who might never compete against riders from another region, are still competing in events at a similar rider level.
- However, it does allow committed riders the opportunity to score more points should they make the effort to travel to National events in other regions.
- It creates a youth category that will recognise the efforts made in any region and hopefully stimulate growth in that area.
- It prevents numerous foreign pro-riders from dominating the standings, but enables those who are contributing to the industry throughout the year to raise the level of the competition.
I think we are very short of information when it comes to understanding our industry. Although not explicitly stated, I think it is imperative that the riders register and support the websites. I think a single website representing the official link between the SA windsurfing national body and SA windsurfers would be ideal. But as long as there is good communication between the regions and the event organisers, there is no reason why they all can’t exist and continue to serve the people of that region. |

Big props to you Steve, for putting this all together. I think the new platform for deciding on a national discipline and overall champ, is very fair for everyone in all regions.
There is no excuse anymore for sailors to complain about the lack of events and organisation within SA. Someone has stepped up and taken on alot getting this done very diplomatically. The bar as now been set, and if it is not reached then the failure falls purely upon us, the sailors. This means I'll be embarrassing myself by entering the wave comps and showing everyone what really wipeouts look like. But hey, I might even score some points for them. Look forward to the awesome session coming up.
Well done again Steve, and I hope to see all the sailors supporting these events. The future of windsurfing in SA is looking brighter by the day. |
